Know Your Oats
We all are aware of different benefits of oats but before buying your oats, you should know about the different types and its nutritive value as well.
Steel-cut

- Also known as Irish or Scotch oats
- These are cut, not rolled
- Look like chopped-up rice
- Take the longest time to cook
- Slightly chewy consistency
Old fashioned

- Also known as rolled oats
- Look like flat little ovals
- During processing, kernels are steamed first and then rolled to flatten them
- Take longer time to cook than quick oats but less time than steel-cut oats
Quick or Instant

- Also known as instant oats
- Oats are pre-cooked, dried, and then rolled
- Cook in a few minutes when added to hot water
- Have a mushy texture
Whole oat groats

- Whole oat kernel with the inedible hull removed
- It has a nuttier flavor
- Chewier texture
- They have the longest cooking time, making them less popular than other oats
Oats bran

- The grounded outer layer of the oat groat(coarse meal) that is high in soluble fiber
- Has almost all of the fiber in an oat kernel
- Has the health benefits of a whole grain
